Autonomic modulation of heart rate of young and postmenopausal women undergoing estrogen therapy BJMBR
Neves,V.F.C.; Silva de Sá,M.F.; Gallo Jr.,L.; Catai,A.M.; Martins,L.E.B.; Crescêncio,J.C.; Perpétuo,N.M.; Silva,E..
The aim of the present study was to determine whether estrogen therapy (ET) reduces alterations of the autonomic control of heart rate (HR) due to hypoestrogenism and aging. Thirteen young (24 ± 2.6 years), 10 postmenopausal (53 ± 4.6 years) undergoing ET (PM-ET), and 14 postmenopausal (56 ± 2.6 years) women not undergoing ET (PM) were studied. ET consisted of 0.625 mg/day conjugated equine estrogen. HR was recorded continuously for 8 min at rest in the supine and sitting positions. HR variability (HRV) was analyzed by time (SDNN and rMSSD indices) and frequency domain methods. Power spectral components are reported as normalized units (nu) at low (LF) and high (HF) frequencies, and as LF/HF ratio. Intergroup comparisons: SDNN index was higher in young...

CCR3 antagonist impairs estradiol-induced eosinophil migration to the uterus in ovariectomized mice BJMBR
Araújo,J.M.D.; Silva,L.A.S.; Felix,F.B.; Camargo,E.A.; Grespan,R..
Eosinophils are abundant in the reproductive tract, contributing to the remodeling and successful implantation of the embryo. However, the mechanisms by which eosinophils migrate into the uterus and their relationship to edema are still not entirely clear, since there are a variety of chemotactic factors that can cause migration of these cells. Therefore, to evaluate the role of CCR3 in eosinophil migration, ovariectomized C57BL/6 mice were treated with CCR3 antagonist SB 328437 and 17β-estradiol. The hypothesis that the CCR3 receptor plays an important role in eosinophil migration to the mouse uterus was confirmed, because we observed reduction in eosinophil peroxidase activity in these antagonist-treated uteruses. The antagonist also influenced uterine...

Computer simulations for biological aging and sexual reproduction Anais da ABC (AABC)
STAUFFER,DIETRICH; OLIVEIRA,PAULO M.C. DE; OLIVEIRA,SUZANA MOSS DE; PENNA,THADEU J.P.; MARTINS,JORGE S. SÁ.
The sexual version of the Penna model of biological aging, simulated since 1996, is compared here with alternative forms of reproduction as well as with models not involving aging. In particular we want to check how sexual forms of life could have evolved and won over earlier asexual forms hundreds of million years ago. This computer model is based on the mutation-accumulation theory of aging, using bits-strings to represent the genome. Its population dynamics is studied by Monte Carlo methods.

Delay in gallbladder emptying during the perimenopausal period BJMBR
Petroianu,A.; Oliveira,L.C.; Vieira,M.I..
A pilot study has ascribed an important role in gallbladder motility and emptying to the perimenopausal period. To assess the effect of this period on gallbladder emptying and cholelithogenesis, 25 women in the perimenopausal period without gallbladder disease were submitted to cholangiography and two ultrasound exams. The time for gallbladder emptying and the presence of cholelithiasis were assessed. All patients presented a delay in gallbladder emptying with no relationship to the pre- or postmenopausal period. This finding was not related to lithogenesis. Gallbladder emptying time is longer during the perimenopausal period.

Dynamic resistance training decreases sympathetic tone in hypertensive ovariectomized rats BJMBR
Shimojo,G.L.; Palma,R.K.; Brito,J.O.; Sanches,I.C.; Irigoyen,M.C.; De Angelis,K..
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resistance exercise training on hemodynamics and cardiac autonomic control in ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats. Female rats were divided into 4 groups: sedentary control (SC), sedentary hypertensive (SH), sedentary hypertensive ovariectomized (SHO), and resistance-trained hypertensive ovariectomized (RTHO). Resistance exercise training was performed on a vertical ladder (5 days/week, 8 weeks) at 40-60% maximal load. Direct arterial pressure was recorded. Vagal and sympathetic tones were measured by heart rate (HR) responses to methylatropine (3 mg/kg, iv) and propranolol (4 mg/kg, iv). Ovariectomy resulted in additional increases in blood pressure in hypertensive rats and was associated...

Effects of isoflavone on oxidative stress parameters and homocysteine in postmenopausal women complaining of insomnia Biol. Res.
BRANDÃO,LETÍCIA C; HACHUL,HELENA; BITTENCOURT,LIA R; BARACAT,EDMUND C; TUFIK,SERGIO; D'ALMEIDA,VÂNIA.
Sleep disorders have an increased incidence after menopause. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of isoflavone on some oxidative stress markers in postmenopausal women complaining of insomnia. Women aged between 50-65 years (n=38) were recruited and assigned to a double-blind placebo controlled study for 4 months. The treated group received 100 mg/day of isoflavones. Blood collections were conducted on three different occasions to assess total glutathione; superoxide dismutase and catalase in erythrocytes; lipid peroxidation; and homocysteine plasma concentrations. No differences between the groups were observed. However, all the patients seem to improve their oxidative stress status and homocysteine concentration after treatment....

Effects of isoflavone on the learning and memory of women in menopause: a double-blind placebo-controlled study BJMBR
Santos-Galduróz,R.F.; Galduróz,J.C.F.; Facco,R.L.; Hachul,H.; Tufik,S..
Hormone decline is common to all women during aging and, associated with other factors, leads to cognitive impairment. Its replacement enhances cognitive performance, but not all women present a clinical and family or personal history that justifies its use, mainly women with a history of cancer. The aim of this study was to determine whether a daily oral dose of 80 mg of isoflavone extract for 4 months can produce benefits in women with low hormone levels, contributing to improvement in cognitive aspects. The sample comprised 50- to 65-year-old women whose menstruation had ceased at least 1 year before and who had not undergone hormone replacement. The volunteers were allocated to two groups of 19 individuals each, i.e., isoflavone and placebo. There was...

Ribeiro,T.F.; Azevedo,G.D.; Crescêncio,J.C.; Marães,V.R.F.S.; Papa,V.; Catai,A.M.; Verzola,R.M.M.; Oliveira,L.; Silva de Sá,M.F.; Gallo Jr.,L.; Silva,E..
The aim of the present study was to compare the modulation of heart rate in a group of postmenopausal women to that of a group of young women under resting conditions on the basis of R-R interval variability. Ten healthy postmenopausal women (mean ± SD, 58.3 ± 6.8 years) and 10 healthy young women (mean ± SD, 21.6 ± 0.82 years) were submitted to a control resting electrocardiogram (ECG) in the supine and sitting positions over a period of 6 min. The ECG was obtained from a one-channel heart monitor at the CM5 lead and processed and stored using an analog to digital converter connected to a microcomputer. R-R intervals were calculated on a beat-to-beat basis from the ECG recording in real time using a signal-processing software. Heart rate variability (HRV)...

Hormonal therapy with estradiol and drospirenone improves endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the coronary bed of ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats BJMBR
Borgo,M.V.; Claudio,E.R.G.; Silva,F.B.; Romero,W.G.; Gouvea,S.A.; Moysés,M.R.; Santos,R.L.; Almeida,S.A.; Podratz,P.L.; Graceli,J.B.; Abreu,G.R..
Drospirenone (DRSP) is a progestin with anti-aldosterone properties and it reduces blood pressure in hypertensive women. However, the effects of DRSP on endothelium-dependent coronary vasodilation have not been evaluated. This study investigated the effects of combined therapy with estrogen (E2) and DRSP on endothelium-dependent vasodilation of the coronary bed of ovariectomized (OVX) spontaneously hypertensive rats. Female spontaneously hypertensive rats (n=87) at 12 weeks of age were randomly divided into sham operated (Sham), OVX, OVX treated with E2 (E2), and OVX treated with E2 and DRSP (E2+DRSP) groups. Hemodynamic parameters were directly evaluated by catheter insertion into the femoral artery. Endothelium-dependent vasodilation in response to...

Measurement of serum estrogen and estrogen metabolites in pre- and postmenopausal women with osteoarthritis using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry BJMBR
Gao,W.L.; Wu,L.S.; Zi,J.H.; Wu,B.; Li,Y.Z.; Song,Y.C.; Cai,D.Z..
Although 17β-estradiol (E2) deficiency has been linked to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) in middle-aged women, there are few studies relating other estrogens and estrogen metabolites (EMs) to this condition. We developed a high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method to measure the levels of six EMs (i.e., estrone, E2, estriol, 2-hydroxyestrone, 2-hydroxyestradiol, and 16a-hydroxyestrone) in healthy pre- and postmenopausal women and women with OA. This method had a precision ranging from 1.1 to 3.1% and a detection limit ranging from 10 to 15 pg. Compared to healthy women, serum-free E2 was lower in the luteal and postmenopausal phases in women with OA, and total serum E2 was lower...

Poor sleep in middle-aged women is not associated with menopause per se BJMBR
Tao,M.F.; Sun,D.M.; Shao,H.F.; Li,C.B.; Teng,Y.C..
Whether sleep problems of menopausal women are associated with vasomotor symptoms and/or changes in estrogen levels associated with menopause or age-related changes in sleep architecture is unclear. This study aimed to determine if poor sleep in middle-aged women is correlated with menopause. This study recruited women seeking care for the first time at the menopause outpatient department of our hospital. Inclusion criteria were an age ≥40 years, not taking any medications for menopausal symptoms, and no sleeping problems or depression. Patients were assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), modified Kupperman Index (KI), and Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). A PSQI score of <7 indicated no sleep disorder and ≥7 indicated a sleep disorder....

The FMR1 premutation as a cause of premature ovarian failure in Brazilian women Genet. Mol. Biol.
Costa,Silvia S.; Fonseca,Angela M. da; Bagnoli,Vicente R.; Vianna-Morgante,Angela M..
The loss-of-function mutation of the FMR1 gene due to expansion of the 5' UTR CGG repeat causes the fragile X syndrome, the most frequent form of inherited mental retardation. On the other hand, the FMR1 premutation, which is transcriptionally active and produces the protein, confers an increased risk for premature ovarian failure (POF) to carrier females. Among 41 unrelated Brazilian women with idiopathic POF, we found three carriers of premutations (CGG expansionse > 59 repeats) and two carriers of high-intermediate alleles (50-55 repeats). Two premutations and two intermediate alleles were detected among the 16 familial POF cases, and one premutated woman, among the 25 sporadic cases. The premutation frequency among the familial cases (12.5%)...

Use of Ursodeoxycholic Acid on Post-menopausal Obesity, Hepatic steatosis and Plasma Profile as an Alternative Treatment for Hormone Replacement Therapy BABT
Franzoni,Angelo Christiano; Amorim,Aryane Martins; Silva,João Victor Mariano da; Storti,João Augusto Pires; Oliveira,Monique Cristine de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) as an alternative treatment for menopause pathologies. For this, female Swiss-CD-1 mice were ovariectomized (OVX); SHAM operated mice served as controls. Ten weeks after operation, each group of mice was treated during four weeks with either UDCA, or 17(-estradiol+progesterone. The blood and tissues (liver and periuterine adipose tissue - PUAT) were harvested. The OVX mice had increase body weight, accompanied by liver lipid accumulation. UDCA and HRT treatments reduced these parameters. PUAT was also increased in OVX group and UDCA and HRT treatments reduced this. Histology confirmed the results in the liver and PUAT. The plasma glucose levels were elevated in...
